 Text:        2 Timothy 2:15; 4:1-3
Thesis:      Why do pastors preach on the subject of tithing?

 * * *

I. Pastors preach on the subject of tithing because it is_____________ taught in God’s Word.

                A.     Tithing was practiced 500 years before the law was given to Moses.
Abraham gave a tenth to the priest of God (see Gen 14:20; Heb 7:2)

                B.      The practice of tithing was taught both in the Old and New Testaments.

1.     There are numerous passages in the Old Testament that teach tithing. (such as Lev 27:30, Deut 14:22, 2 Chron 3:1-5, Neh 13:12 and Mal 3:10)

2.    “Jesus, in the New Testament, had more to say about the right use of   possessions than any other single subject.  There are 1565 references to giving in the Bible while there are only 523 references to praying.  At   least 20 out of the 30 major parables of Jesus’ relate to a man’s attitude toward property...1 verse out of every 7 in the four Gospels deals with money and the things money can buy.”  Fletcher Spruce.

II     Pastor’s preach on the subject of tithing because they will stand before God and give an _______________ on what they did or did not teach.

                A.     James 3:1 states, “Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my
brothers because you know that we who teach will be judged more
                         strictly.”

                B.      In Ezekiel 33:1-9 (let’s read it together) God states “The blood of the
unwarned will be on the watchman’s hands.”

III.   Pastors preach on the subject of tithing because they _______________ their people and want to see them blessed by God.

                A.     God’s Word teaches in Malachi 3:10-12 that there is great “blessing” for
                         those who tithe.

                B.      The same passage of scripture also states that God has the power to
“prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields                          will not cast their fruit,” says the Lord Almighty.

                        1.     We need God’s help in the area of our finances so let us practice                          God’s financial principle called tithing.
