Text Box: A NEW MESSAGE IN A PAGAN LAND
 
TEXT:      1 Corinthians 1-3
THESIS:  The Apostle Paul was called by God to bring the message of Jesus Christ to a
                  morally corrupt people.
 
         I.       Corinth was one of the most flourishing _______________ centers of the
                  ancient world.
 
                  A.      Corinth was called the “Bridge of Greece.”
 
                           1.      Corinth was the capital of the province with 200,000 inhabitants.
 
                           2.      Corinth was the major trade route of North/South and East/West traffic of
                                    the Mediterranean Sea due to the extreme danger of sailing around Cape
                                    Malea (now called Cape Matapan).

                  B.      God _______________ places Paul in the heavily traveled cross road of the
                           ancient world.

“There was one source of evil in the city which was known all over the civilized world.  Above the isthmus towered the hill of the Acropolis, and on it stood the great temple of Aphrodite, the
goddess of love.  To that temple was attached one thousand priestess’ who were sacred prostitutes, and in the evening they descended from the Acropolis and applied their trade upon the streets of Corinth, until it became a Greek proverb, ‘It is not every man who can afford a journey to
Corinth.’”   William Barclay
