PERGAMUM
Jesus Saves Christians that are Surrounded by Satan’s Practices
 
TEXT:    Revelations 2:12-17
 
 
         I.       Jesus Christ is the _________________ of kings and ________________ of
                  lords.  (vs 12-14)
 
                  A.      Jesus Christ “has the sharp ________________-edged sword.”  (vs 12)
 
“Roman governors were divided into two classes ~ those who had the ‘ius gladii’, the right of the sword, and those who had not.  Those who had the right of the sword had the power of life and death; on their word a man could be executed on the spot...Pergamum, had the right of the sword, and at any moment a Roman Governor might use it against any Christian.”  William Barkley
 
                           1.      Jesus seeks to encourage the Christian by reminding them he has the

feet up on Pergamum’s conical hill.  Forty feet high it stood on a projecting ledge of rock
and looked exactly like a great throne on a hillside.  All day it smoked with the smoke of
sacrifices offered to Zeus.”  William Barkley
 
                                    b)      Pergamum worshiped Asclepios, the god of healing and his temples
                                             were the nearest approach to hospitals in the ancient world.  The
                                             serpent was the symbol of the god Asclepios.
 
                                    c)      Pergamum was recognizes as the seat of learning with its library
                                             that contained over 200,000 parchments.  (the word parchment is
                                             derived from the word Pergamum which means charta or sheet)
 
 
         II.      Jesus Christ recognized their faithfulness in difficult circumstances but
                  admonishes them to ______________ evil practices that are sinful. (vss 14-17)
 
                  A.      God loves us and knows that sin and evil practices will __________________
                           our bodies, minds and our souls.  (14-15)
