             “Godly Wisdom vs. Earthly Wisdom”

Text:    James 3:13-18
Thesis: “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives
generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”
James 1:5

 I.  God reveals to us, through James, there are __________ distinct types of wisdom.  (vs. 13-17)
    A.  There is an _____________wisdom that does not reflect the nature or will              of God.
          1.  A person who lives by earthly wisdom will “__________ bitter envy”                (vs. 14a) in their heart.
               a.  Envy is “a feeling of resentment or discontent over another’s
superior attainments, endowments, or possessions.  A desire to
possess the good of another.” (Funk & Wagnal)
          2.  A person who lives by earthly wisdom will also “harbor ___________                 ambition in their hearts,” (vs. 14b)
               a.  A person with selfish ambition has a total disregard for _________                      in their pursuit of wealth, possessions & power.
“Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the
                interests of others.”  (Phil. 2:4)
               b.  Selfish ambition will reduce people to an ______________ to be                      manipulated for personal gain rather than a person to love and                      bless.
“God created man (mankind) in his own image”  (Gen. 2:27)
               c.  God’s Word states this type of wisdom is “of the devil” and results                      in “disorder and every evil practice”  (vs. 15-16)
     B.  God’s Word also reveals the second type of wisdom:
“comes from heaven” (vs17) and reflects God’s ______________and              ______________.
           1.  Wisdom from heaven is described as:
                 a.  “Pure” – the Greek word (hagnos) means “pure enough to
                          approach the gods.”
                 b.  “Peace loving” – the Greek word (eirenkos) means “right
relationship with man and man and between man and God.”
c.  “Considerate” – the Greek word (epiekos) carries the idea of not
demanding justice when someone is wrong, but tempering justice with mercy.
d.  “Full of mercy and good fruit” – the Greek word (eleos) means pity for the man who is suffering unjustly.
e. “Impartial” – the Greek word (adiakritos) means “without
       partiality”
f. “Sincere” – the Greek word (anurokntos) means without
hypocrisy.  It carries the idea of honesty; it never acts a part to gain its own ends.
