.. I. Jesus challenges his disciples to engage in ministry. A. There is more to ministry than pointing out what needs to be done. 1. The disciples were used to relying on Jesus to carry out ministry. a. A clergy-driven church is unscriptural. B. the Christian is called on by God to do good works. For we are Gods workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed, but does nothing bout his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. James 2:14-17 He replied to him, Who is my mother, and who are my brother? Pointing to his disciples, he said, Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother. Matthew 12:48-50 II. Jesus only asks his disciples to do what they were spiritually capable of doing. A. God gives us assignments based on our God-given abilities and will hold us accountable for the completion of these tasks. (see Matthew 25:14-30) III. The request of Jesus will bring present and future blessings. A. The disciples could have been used by God and instrumental in producing a miracle. EXAMPLES IN SCRIPTURE 1. Abraham and Sarah become parents at 100 and 90. 2. Moses parts the Red Sea. 3. David at 17 slays a 9 foot warrior. 4. Peter walks on water B. Those who answer Gods call will learn more and accomplish more than those who say no. C. Those who say yes to God will receive many in their crown. |
