THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST Text: Luke 20:41-47 Thesis: Jesus is 100% man and 100% God. I. The Jewish religious leaders did not recognize Jesus as the Messiah, the Christ or Divine. A. The Sadducees sought to discredit Jesus’ claim of being the Messiah in front of the general public. In sarcasm they call him “teacher”. B. The Jewish nation has always believed, even to this day, that the Messiah would give them world dominion, military power and material conquest. 1. This thinking is possibly what motivated Judas to betray Jesus. 2. This thinking possibly motivated the crowd to desire “forcing Jesus in being king”. (John 6:15) 3. Jesus came the first time to bring man spiritual victory from sin and from Satan ~ not their physical enemies. C. In an attempt to correct their misunderstanding of the Messiah, Jesus draws their attention to the words of David found in Psalms 110:1. 1. David, in the Psalms, calls the Messiah “My Lord” revealing that Jesus was not only from the lineage of David but existing as God prior to David. 2. Jesus is God. II. Beware of religions that deny the divinity of Jesus. A. They look good on the outside but are powerless to bring you spiritual salvation from sin, Satan and hell. B. It is not enough to accept Jesus as a good man or even a prophet of God. 1. Jesus was both 100% man and 100% God. 2. It is a ploy of Satan to present Jesus as only a man. |
